 Welcome to Gracie Barra Calgary! For new visitors to our site, Gracie Barra Calgary is an academy offering the highest levels of instruction in the ever more popular martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is an official representative of the world famous Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu team. Gracie Barra Calgary (or GBC) is lead by Professor Josh Russell, Canada's first martial artist to be awarded the rank of black belt by Master Carlos Gracie Gracie Jr. himself. Professor Russell earned his place in the martial art world by moving to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All in order to refine his skills not only on the mat as a competitor, but also as an instructor by training and competing with some of the most highly decorated martial artists in the world today. Now back in Canada, Professor Russell has brought all that he has learned home to Calgary, where you too can learn. We offer classes for people of all ages and from all walks of life. For those who are looking for a great fun way to get into shape, recreational competitors and even the most serious professional mixed martial art fighters. Monday December 22 will be the last day of training (both classes open to all) before Christmas. We'll have Open Mat on Saturday December 27 and we will return Friday January 2 for the adults and Saturday January 3 for the kids. Everyone have a safe Holiday, looking to seeing everyone in the New Year! |

In his second Pro MMA fight Professor Josh Russell made quick work of his adversary Colby Synder. Working for a takedown and quickly establishing a side mount, Professor Russell took his opponents back. At 1:44 of the first round Russell finished the fight with a Rear Naked Choke! |

Professor Josh Russell Wins Pro MMA Debut |
 Professor Josh Russell won his pro mma debut Sept. 26th winning a unanimous decision (30-27 30-27 29-28) over Mike Gates (11-6-1) It was a battle with Russell controlling most of the fight on the ground. At one point right after Russell took down Gates his opponent was able to open Russell's forehead with a well timed elbow. This looked worse than it was and Russell went on to victory. Congrats Professor!
